Misdirection, it is the lifeblood of all magicians. Without it, most magic tricks would fail. We need you to look where we want you to look, when we want you to look there, so you won't see what you would see if you were looking over here.
Wayne Lapierre saw that the wholesale murder of 20 children in their classrooms really got our attention, so he capitalized on that reaction by using it to put forth a solution that is pure misdirection.
He wants you to think that the problem is children dying, and the solution is to put armed guards in all our chools today, then our problem will be solved. The misdirection is, children are not the only victims of gun violence. In fact, men, women, teens, the elderly, teachers, students, husbands, fathers, wives, daughters, son's, uncles, cops, teachers, firefighters, the homeless, and the home free, all are victims of or potential victims of gun violence.
Because we finally said enough is enough when these kids died so young, we opened the door for LaPierre to make his insane proposition that the solution we need is to protect our children in their schools.
Many agree with him. All are wrong to do so. They are not wrong because they want to protect children, they are wrong because you have to protect everyone, protecting the young in their classrooms would sell a lot of guns, but it would do nothing to stop the violence, it would simply changes it's location at best, or get the armed guard killed before the children. It would not stop all the other murders that happen every single day in this country. Only getting control of our guns in this country can truly end gun violence. I've heard of people being shot by an empty gun, I've heard of people being shot by accident, but what I haven't heard, ever, is someone being shot by a non existent gun.
What we have here is a Neo-Conservative Supreme Court that decided that what the founding fathers intended was that every person in our country had a right to own and carry a gun. That was not their intent, and the fact that the Republican dominated Supreme Court came to that conclusion is one of the most indefensible decisions in the history of the Supreme Court.
A well regulated militia is what they wanted. Volunteers, who, if and when the need arose, could be called on by the Governor to defend their respective towns is what they were talking about, Well trained citizens, well known to the community, so that a private army need not be maintained, as the founding fathers knew that type of defense (a private or professional army) is exactly how countries are overthrown by dictators. Control the army, and you control the country.
We cannot post guards all over our country. We can use the Constitution to take us to a place where we should be. Safe from guns, and safe from ourselves. We only need guns because there are guns.
How many more of us will die before we understand that simple truth?
