How I would love to see that in the back and forth negotiations. Personally, I would like us to go back to the 91% top tax rate, because it has so many built in fixes for what ailes us. First, get this notion that it is income redistribution out of your head right now.
When we had a 91% tax rate, companies did not pay 91%. Executives did not pay 91% income tax. What they did instead was take their profit and spend it on little but important things like higher salaries for their employees, healthcare for their employees, business expansion, more knowledgable employees...something called service, instead of automated tellers, you had real people who actually were making a loving wage, who enjoyed their work, etc.....so it wasn't the government taking the money from the company and giving it to the poor, it was the companies sticking it to the government by paying their people a lot more money, so they wouldn't have enough profit to get anywhere near that 91% tax bracket. Do you get it? It balances the distribution of money by making it too painful for greedy rich people to try and screw everyone else. Why not pay your employees more, if you would just have to give that same money to the government in taxes if you don't? There is a side benefit that the Rich seem to have forgotten. When people get paid more, they have more to spend, so you rich people get the money flowing back to you anyway!
Since we are going to have to suffer more before we realize why the 91% tax rate worked so well, and we bring it back, I really would like Republicans to get the message about what we think of their tactics of trying to steal the White House this last election. I think a new tax rate on people over 250,000/yr should be 47%. Every time they see that 47% tax rate mentioned, they'll remember how they brought us Mitt Romney, and tried to shove him down our throats for 8 years.
Well, I think that choking on a 47% tax rate for 8 years would be a just punishment for your crimes.
