Are you as tired of never ending war as I am?
When you think about it, there is a reason we have been in constant wars for decades, and it sure as hell isn't because we had to be there. It is because War is the ultimate profit center, the ultimate debit card. You think a platinum card is impressive? Not even close.
Try a system where no one says you have to watch your pennies, there is no one watching what contracts are paying how much for this, and how much for that, where cost plus contracts (a republican idea of course) the most insane way of doing business ever conceived is practically the rule rather than the exception to the rule, and private military contractors with profit margins that would make even a payday loan business green with envy are all over the house and senate.
To pull off this never ending war footing we have been on, the masses must barely feel the wars when they are waged. We are no longer drafted, and there is a reason for that. When you have the draft, you have parents who start asking why we are fighting this war. When you have to watch your child go off to war, you want to know that there was no other way than war.
War profiteers need war to profit from it. Peace time is like a recession to them. So, you have to gin up some conflict somewhere, or torture people to get them to grow their resistance movement, or allow terrorists to escape rather than capture or kill them because gosh, if you actually kill the guy you are holding up as enemy number one, people might think it's time to go home!
So, when Barack Obama actually thought it was a good idea to kill Osama Bin Laden, and then it was done, what was the reaction from the right wing? They were pissed off.
If we ever want to end this madness of never ending war, we can. Pass a War Tax. Tax the hell out of everyone in this country when we are at war. If this War is so important that we absolutely have to be there, and we absolutely cannot find any other way than to engage in War, then we need to stop putting war on a credit card, where we don't know what is being charged, there is no accountability, and no one is even talking about it, even as 10 Billion dollars a month are still going out the door, and for what? Training someone else how to fight for themselves?
I don't like War. But, if someone wants to come here, and invade our land, I'll be one of the first to pick up a weapon and fight. But if we have to fight wars, then at least make sure everyone feels it. If we have an immediate imposition of a War tax on everyone, and that includes raising sales taxes, the gas tax, income taxes, every frigging tax you can think, then let's see how much Republican voters clap when some politician tells them we might stay in that country for 100 years. You want war to be harder to start and quicker to end? Institute a mandatory War Tax.
You want to feel better about it? Call it an investment in Peace.
